Celebrate Community: A Story of Service Organizations

Kiwanis, Rotary, Lions, Aktion Club, Key Club and Impact Club Leadership from the four main international service organizations encouraged clubs around the world — and their youth programs — to work together on projects during Celebrate Community. Locally, Kent-area service clubs worked together to organize a cleanup of the Green River Trail on October 16, 2021.  Volunteers met at 9:30am to socialize over doughnuts and coffee, and cleaned the trail from approximately 10am - 12pm.  Approximately 75 volunteers from the following clubs were in attendance: the Kent Lions Club, Kent Kiwanis Club, Kent-AM Kiwanis Club, Kent Rotary Club, Kent Sunrise Rotary Club, Green River Valley Aktion Club (a Kiwanis Club), and Kentridge…

2021 Installation & Awards Banquet

A beautiful backyard banquet. The Kent AM Kiwanis Club met at incoming President Dino Traverso's house for a lovely backyard banquet September 22nd to install the 2021-2022 Board of Directors and Officers and celebrate a wonderful year of service. It was a cool fall evening as we gathered together for one of only a few times during this challenging pandemic year. Celebrating outgoing President Matthew York, with a lego theme, was a pure joy and reminded us all not to take ourselves to seriously. Matthew took the time to walk around to everyone gathered to share his praise on their contributions to our club, community and mission to service. He presented the Kiwanian of the Year award to Taek Kim for his energy and efforts bringing new ideas and opportunities to our club this year.  The evening concluded with incoming President Dino Traverso sharing his vision to get engagement from…

Key Club & Kiwanis Team Up 2 Clean Up

Each spring and fall the City of Kent hosts Team Up 2 Clean Up! A litter cleanup event where community members work to beautify Kent as individuals or in teams at various locations around the city. The Kent AM Kiwanis Club and 19 young members of the Kentridge Key Club participated in a joint service project on September 18th. Meeting up at the Golden Steer they made it their mission to help clean up the East Hill. Our first joint service project with the Kentridge Key Club was a great success. Key Club members around the world are learning how to lead and stand for what’s right through service and volunteerism. In partnership with their local Kiwanis club, high school students are making a positive impact as they serve others in their schools and communities. As Kiwanians we are proud to help shape the future generation of community members through our sponsorship of…

Successful Fun Day of Golf

In partnership with the Meeker Street Bar & Grill, Kent AM Kiwanis co-hosted our first Golf Tournament on August 21st at the Riverbend Golf Course. It was a beautiful sunny day out on the course and spirits were high as everyone played for fun and prizes! Taek Kim, owner of Meeker Street Bar & Grill and Kent AM Kiwanis Board Member, hosted a wonderful post golf raffle and lunch at Meeker Street. Club Member Rushaad Tate played the role of auctioneer and did a great job getting everyone excited. Overall, it was a very fun event for all involved, golfers and volunteers alike. We ended up with 25 teams; 100 players plus some other special guests, including Lori Matsukawa, former King 5 anchor, a true pleasure. Everyone had a really good time for the actual event plus lunch, the entertainment, and raffle drawing. Some of our prizes included 2 sets…

Local Kiwanis Clubs collect over 23,000 Diapers

More than 23,000 diapers for families in need were collected at a local Kiwanis Club diaper drive last month. The diaper drive was hosted by Division 32 of the Pacific Northwest District of Kiwanis. Operating as a service club during the pandemic has been challenging, said Kiwanis Club member Rita Ann Schwarting. Matthew York, president of the Kent-AM Kiwanis Club, came up with the idea of a diaper drive. He challenged the six other clubs in Division 32 (now 28) to see how many diapers could be gathered to support local nonprofits. The challenge was also extended to the Key Clubs that Kiwanis Clubs support in local high schools to see how many baby wipes they could gather. The results are impressive, Schwarting said. A total of 23,392 diapers and 2,960 wipes were collected. Among the organizations that received this bounty were Living Well Kent, The Kinship Program, Kent Covenant…
